Iran is one of the largest agrofood markets in the Middle East

Facts & figures on the Iranian agrofood market

With a population of 95 million, Iran has long been the largest food market in the Middle East. Expenditure in the F&B sector is growing steadily, and F&B production is by far the largest segment of the Iranian processing industry. 

Accordingly, the demand for food and beverage ingredients is rising continuously. Iran ranks globally among the top five producers of apricots, cherries, sour cherries, cucumbers and gherkins, dates, eggplants, figs, pistachios, quinces, saffron, walnuts, and watermelons.

According to WTO, Iranian food imports made up for US16.9bn in 2023. Food exports amounted for US$5.8bn compared to US$4.8bn in 2022. Thus, food trade with Iran was a US$22.7bn business in 2023.

According to VDMA, Iranian imports of food processing and packaging machinery amounted to €138 million in 2023.

Imports of packaging machinery made up for €66m in 2023.

Iranian imports of agricultural technology have grown by 15.8% annually over the past five years. The Iranian market for agricultural technology thus ranks among the TOP 2 in the Middle East, in line with Saudi Arabia.
